Abstract

The IBM PS/2 with the graphics display 8514/A has been selected for monitoring of patients in the operating room, intensive care, and critical care environments. The system has been selected because of its simplicity and compatibility with the most widespread personal computer, the IBM AT. A multitasking kernel is used above DOS. The essential features of the system are the interface with various medical instruments, real-time graphical display, network capabilities, and intensive mathematical calculations. It is concluded that computerized monitoring, though it does not fulfill directly any real demands in the intensive care or critical care environments, provides assistance by logical connectivity to improve the quality and efficiency of patient care.
