Abstract

Sonography is an important diagnostic tool in postoperative liver transplantation for the diagnosis of vascular complications, suspected or unsuspected. Early diagnosis of vascular complications can improve graft and patient survival by allowing earlier treatment. This article focuses on the evaluation of liver transplant vascular complications with duplex Doppler ultrasound. Because of the range of normal appearances in the immediate postoperative liver transplant, the ability to recognize normal postoperative findings from true complications is critical for interpretation. These normal early postoperative findings, as well as a brief explanation of basic liver transplant surgical techniques, are also reviewed.
