UWB imaging system for early breast cancer detection in inhomogeneous breast tissues

Abstract

An ultra-wideband (UWB) microwave imaging scheme with separated transmitter and receiver was investigated by using finite difference time domain method (FDTD). Inhomogeneity of the breast tissue was taken into account in the breast model. The multi-look scheme was adopted to attenuate the deterioration of imaging quality arisen by the inhomogeneity of the breast tissue. Successful imaging results of a 4-mm-diameter spherical tumor by using the confocal imaging algorithm demonstrate the feasibility of the scheme in the detection of early breast cancer.
