note = "Funding Information: 2 The paper is part of a larger inquiry into the history of tuberculosis in southern Africa and is based on research carried out in southern Africa in 1982 and 1985. Support for this research was provided by a Fulbright Research Award from the Council for the International Exchange of Scholars, as well as by research grants from the Office of Education, and the Social Science Research Council. Funding Information: The efforts of medical authorities on the Rand to control TB also included research into the epidemiology of the disease. This research led in 1925 to the creation of a Tuberculosis Research Committee jointly funded by the Union Government and the Chamber of Mines. The Committee worked for seven years, publishing their findings in 1932. The report was widely regarded in South Africa and abroad as the most exhaustive inquiry to date into the problem of tuberculosis among blacks. As such, it played a significant role in shaping ideas about the causes and prevention of TB in South Africa. Copyright: Copyright 2016 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.",
