Trends in medical education research: Past, present, and future

Abstract

A conference of medical educators and social scientists was convened by the National Center for Health Services Research and Development to identify areas for future medical education research. The following areas were identified: (a) Selection of Physicians the applicants’ and the medical schools’ admission procedures; (b) Medical School Socialization Process-further delineation of faculty influences, curricular changes, and the effects of undergraduate learning environment on socialization; (c) House Officer Training-attitude formation during house officership, disparity in role demands of house officers and medical students, and the effects of house officership on ultimate choice of practice; (d) Medical Schools as Social Institutions-effects of changes in health services delivery on the educational process and analysis of descriptive climate variables within schools; and (e) Physician Performance-development of measures of physician performance against which the effects of variables such as selection process, socialization, and individual characteristics may be gauged.
