Abstract

Transmyocardial laser revascularization (TMR) has been used to treat patients with end-stage coronary artery disease since the early 1980s. Following several individual and multi-institutional investigations, prospective randomized clinical trials have demonstrated symptomatic relief for patients treated with transmyocardial laser revascularization. Two different types of lasers are being used in the clinical arena, Holmium:YAG and CO2. Additionally, two different methods of laser revascularization have been attempted: open surgical and cathetered-based approaches.
