Abstract
The focus on quality in healthcare has provided the opportunity for many national organizations to develop strategies and measures to improve healthcare quality. This chapter focuses on evidence for improving safety and quality within the context of the Health and Medicine Division of the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine’s four strategic recommendations and offers practical insights and tools for nurse leaders at all levels of practice. This chapter discusses the national momentum that is moving healthcare from awareness and acknowledgment of quality and patient safety deficits to accountability for quality of care and patient safety outcomes, the importance of viewing healthcare delivery as a science to discover and translate evidence to improve quality and safety, and the role of high reliability organizations in quality and safety improvement efforts. This chapter also offers an example of a practical organizing framework used for quality and safety translation initiatives and describes several successful innovative patient safety and quality initiatives that have translated evidence into practice for healthcare improvement.
