Abstract

The past few years have witnessed remarkable continuing progress in our understanding of the pathogenesis of nicotine dependence and withdrawal and the ability to treat these disorders. In particular, a better understanding of populations at special risk, the advent of effective over-the-counter medications and the recent approval of several new medications has greatly increased the ability of health professionals to rationally diagnose and effectively treat their tobacco-using patients.
