Abstract

The themed issue of the Journal of Materials Chemistry B discusses four important reviews on topics related to nanoscale materials. Dr Pfeifer and colleagues provide an overview of the application of biomaterials as vaccines that are safe and effective in fighting infectious diseases. Biomaterials are being designed to elicit specific immune responses towards genetic vaccines, particularly with respect to nanomaterials. Dr Amiji and colleagues present a review on developments in the design and application of nanoscale delivery systems for cancer therapy. Dr Eckmann and colleagues provide a review on nanogels and their tailored properties related to targeting and therapeutic release. Dr Gramlich and colleagues outline a coatings approach to limit biofilm production on implants.
