The urban American Indian.

The social and economic problems confronting most urban Indians are overwhelming. After an historical introduction, chapters compare the status of Indians in American towns and cities with those remaining on the reservations. The various government programmes to relocate Indians away from the reservations are evaluated. The high incidence of alcoholism and more general health problems are discussed. This is followed by studies of the urban housing and social services, educational opportunities and attainment, and the development of Indian institutions. By means of a series of case studies, the problems of acculturation and adjustment to urban life are studied, and the volume ends by outlining the scope for future research and the considerable scope for improvements at the federal level in the approach to, and treatment of, the urban Indian. -J.
