Abstract

As many as one million patients annually report to the emergency room with eye trauma. Most penetrating eye injuries occur in the home, but occupational injuries, athletic competition, motor vehicle accidents, and assaults all contribute to abundance of eye injuries sustained each year. The medical, legal, social and economic impact of eye injuries could be reduced significantly by proper preventive measures. Statistics show that 95 percent of all penetrating eye injuries in the workplace occur from failure to wear safety glasses and that eye injuries in motor vehicle accidents decline significantly in settings where seatbelt use is mandatory.
