Abstract
Understanding how cardiac output is regulated requires consideration of the function of the vasculature as well as the function of the heart. This is especially true when it is desired to understand interactions between the circulatory and respiratory systems. Thanks to the work of Guyton and his associates, the importance of vascular function, originally emphasized by Weber and Starling so may years ago, is again being appreciated.
