note = "Funding Information: The Association of Professors of Medicine (APM)—the national organization of departments of internal medicine at U.S. medical schools and numerous affiliated teaching hospitals as represented by chairs and appointed leaders—is a uniquely important NIH constituent. Departments of internal medicine include the nation{\textquoteright}s top scientists conducting groundbreaking basic, clinical, translational, and health services research. They also conduct the most research sponsored by NIH, receiving approximately 30% of all NIH extramural funding awarded to medical schools (3) . By comparison, departments of psychiatry conduct the second most research sponsored by NIH and receive approximately 8% of extramural funding (3) . Moreover, departments of internal medicine conduct a large amount of research sponsored by the Veterans Health Administration of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), the Agency for Health Care Research and Quality, and the private sector.
