Abstract

In conclusion, Gur is a cis-acting regulatory element which influences the rate of glucuronidase synthesis in response to androgens and progestins. The mechanism by which Gur influences the rate of enzyme synthesis remains to be established. A variety of biological studies reviewed above suggests that it affects the structural gene directly. If this is the case, then Gur could influence the rate of mRNA synthesis from the structural gene. It is also possible that the androgen-receptor complex may interact directly at the Gur locus. If this contention is correct, then Gur may distinguish whether an androgen or a progestin is bound to the androgen receptor.
