Abstract

As imposing as these barriers appear, the urgency of expanding opportunities for ambulatory education at the undergraduate and graduate level will create pressure for solutions. The mandate of The GPEP Report that students must be prepared to learn throughout their professional lives and that this learning be independent and self-directed will not be fulfilled if the educational laboratory is confined to the current inpatient units of our teaching hospitals. I hope that the goals for medical education presented in this paper will aid in the process of making fuller use of the ambulatory setting.
