The Changing Ivory Tower: Balancing Mission and Business

Abstract

There are tremendous challenges involved in balancing mission and money in health care. Academic health centers (AHCs) need sufficient margins and public support to subsidize the important work they do caring for society's sickest patients, pioneering new medical technologies, making biomedical discoveries, and educating future physicians. The business landscape for AHCs in the United States is changing rapidly due to legislative reforms, growing competition, and the urgent need to control health care expenditures. To continue leading the way in medicine, AHCs are breaking from tradition and implementing sustainable, forward-looking changes in all three areas of the mission (research, education, clinical care).
