Systemic and intraventricular naloxone administration: Effects on food and water intake

Abstract

Previous research has demonstrated that systemic administration of the opiate antagonist naloxone suppresses consummatory behaviors in rodents. This study was conducted to compare the effects of systemic and intraventricular administration of naloxone on food and water intake in rats. Intraperitoneal injections of naloxone (0.5-5.0 mg/kg) significantly decreased both food and water intake following 24 hr of deprivation. However, no significant effects on either food or water intake were observed following administration of naloxone (0.5-50 μg) into the lateral ventricles. These results indicate that additional studies into the site(s) and mechanism(s) of naloxone's effects on consummatory behaviors are required.
