Abstract

Numerous chemicals are known to affect synaptic transmission, but they may or may not be neurotransmitters themselves. This volume discusses these compounds, including cyclic AMP, purines, hypothalamic releasing factors, and steroids; it reviews new breakthroughs regarding the opiate receptor. Specific topics include: effects of drugs on energy metabolism of the brain and on cerebral transport; the role of cyclic nucleotides in the nervous system; purinergic transmission; hypothalamic hypophysiotropic hormone; and binding, metabolism, and the action of steroid hormones in the central nervous system.
