Abstract
To the Editor: Kendig and his coinvestigators should be commended for their well-done comparison of surfactant given as prophylaxis and as rescue therapy in very premature neonates (March 28 issue).1 I disagree, however, with the editorial comment of Avery and Merritt,2 who state that “no substantial advantage accrues to infants born after more than 26 weeks of gestation.” In fact, the point estimates are similar for the effects of prophylactic surfactant in subgroups of infants born at >26 weeks and at ≤26 weeks. In the former group, infants treated with surfactant rescue therapy had a relative risk of dying of.
