Abstract
A major cause of death following severe trauma is nosocomial infection, especially in a critical care setting. Any break in the skin and/or connecting points within the monitoring system serves as a portal of entry for bacteria. The stopcock is a vital link in this system but has received very little attention. Therefore, a prospective study was undertaken at the Mayland Institute for Emergency Medicine to determine the relationship between organisms isolated from stopcocks and those isolated from the insertion site, the catheter tip, or the circulating blood.
