Abstract

ST3Gal-IV is a member of the β-galactoside α-2,3-sialyltransferase family, transferring sialic acid in α2,3 linkage from CMP-NeuAc preferentially to Galβ1-4GlcNAc termini, but also to Galβ1-3GlcNAc and Galβ1-3GalNAc termini on glycoproteins and glycolipids. Included among its acceptors is Lex (Galβ1-4(Fucα1-3)GlcNAc) to produce sialyl Lex, a glycan determinant important in leukocyte trafficking.
