Abstract

There appear to be two types of sphincter of Oddi dysfunction: papillary stenosis and dyskinesia. Sphincter of Oddi dysfunction is an important cause of biliary-type pain. Papillary stenosis is a fixed anatomic narrowing of the papilla, while dyskinesia is characterized by a variety of manometric abnormalities. This article reviews the diagnosis of sphincter of Oddi dysfunction and the medical, surgical, and endoscopic approaches to its treatment.
