Although parallel computing has usually implied multiple processors in one machine, it is no longer restricted to this view. The many processors in a computer network can be harnessed and used for parallel processing as well. This network-based parallel computer is referred to as a hypercomputer. Appropriate software and a coordination language are required to access and to control the hypercomputer, but essentially, it is free for the taking by employing unused, but available, machine cycles from the various processors on the network. This article describes hypercomputing and Linda, an example of hypercomputer software.
