Single daily dose methylphenidate in hyperactive children

Abstract

On the single daily dose schedule reported in this study, only 9 of the 35 children continuing on methylphenidate received daily doses greater than 20 mgm. This is of some import because methylphenidate in daily doses of 20 mgm. or less has little effect on growth in children, whereas doses over 20 mgm. can cause growth suppression. A disadvantage of the once daily administration of methylphenidate compared to b.i.d. schedule is that in approximately 15% of the cases, its duration following an effective dose is insufficient to influence the child during the latter part of the school day. By not receiving a noon or 3 p.m. dose, the child is also not chemically supported to attend to after school play in a less restless manner. Parental inquiries into this matter, however, gave no evidence that it constituted a problem for them.
