Sex related differences in metabolism of 14C acetate in response to steroid hormones by isolated rat hepatocytes

Abstract

No differences were found in the basal rate of lipid synthesis from 14C acetate in hepatocytes isolated from mature male and virgin female rats. Lipid biosynthesis was stimulated 22-43% in the female 60 min after the addition of gonadal steroids. This rapid response suggests that subtle differences exist in the enzyme profile controlling the pathways of lipid metabolism in male and female rats. These differences may have been determined genetically or acquired after a period of sex dependent hormonal stimulation beginning with puberty.
