Scrimpy-eye, a sex-linked mutant in the Aedes scutellaris complex of mosquitoes

Abstract

Scrimpy-eye is a mutant in the Aedes scutellaris complex of mosquitoes. The mutation, which is detectable in larval, pupal, and adult stages, affects color, size, and structure of the compound eyes in Aedes cooki. The eyes are light brown in color and only one-third as large as the eyes of wild-type mosquitoes. The ommatidia are irregular in shape and size, the cornea is fuzzy and inner structure of individual ommatidia is strongly modified. Penetrance is complete and expressivity variable. Most of the mutant individuals fly in a waltzy motion. The scrimpy-eye character is controlled by a single recessive gene located on the sex chromosome. The linkage distance between the sy locus and the sex locus estimated from the crossover data from both F2 and backcrosses is 2.5 ± 0.5 map units.
