Abstract

Myocardial tissue obtained at the time of open heart surgery from 19 patients, rat ventricular cells grown in tissue culture and atrial and ventricular tissue from newborn puppies were examined with the electron microscope in order to delineate the function of the sarcomeric Z band. The data obtained from this investigation make it apparent that Z substance is essential for the production of new sarcomeres in the myofibril, and is the source of new contractile units in situations of growth, maintenance and repair in the heart.
