Abstract
Presents regional FAO data on trends in tropical tree cover and compares these with other data sources. Agents of forest destruction and reafforestation are discussed, in particular the role of fuelwood gathering and industrial wood supply. For both these sectors trends are assessed and regional problems highlighted. The role of forests in water resource conservation, soil stabilization and global climatic change is discussed. Finally presents a framework for mobilizing reforestation programmes. -R.Land
