Abstract

This article describes the clinical presentation, diagnostic evaluation, and management of patients with Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD) and causalgia. It emphasizes that patients with RSD and causalgia may present with predominantly sympathetically maintained pain while others may have pain that is independent of the sympathetics. The recent development of animal models of neuropathic pain has greatly enhanced our knowledge of the pathophysiological mechanisms and provides potentially useful tools to test the efficacy of therapeutic agents.
