Recent advances in our understanding of Parkinson's disease

Research output: Contribution to journalArticle

Abstract

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a chronic and progressive neurodegenerative disease with complex causes. Through scientific investigation of the gene products identified to be linked to inherited PD, common potential mechanisms in the development of PD are being unveiled, that is, defects in mitochondrial function as well as protein folding and degradation through the ubiquitin-proteosomal system leading to cell death. Understanding these mechanisms might lead to new arenas of therapeutic intervention.
