Abstract

This article examines the interaction between the fields ofpsychology and cancer medicine from a historical perspective. Pioneeringefforts of early investigators are reviewed, and the enormous growth ofpsychosocial oncology over the last 2 decades is highlighted. Articlescomprising this series are represented as an outgrowth of the realization thatthe psychological status of the cancer patient is as relevant to the outcome ofthe illness as the biological status of the disease.
