Abstract
Human prostatic acid phosphatase contains antigenic determinants that are unique for this enzyme. Antisera have been prepared that react specifically with PAP which have been used for several immunoassays. Radioimmunoassay is sensitive, specific and quantitative and should prove valuable in establishing the diagnosis of prostatic acid phosphatase or following the course of disease. Counterimmunoelectrophoresis is somewhat less sensitive, but because of its simplicity lends itself well to screening programs. A new method of immunoenzyme assay has been elaborated that capitalizes on the major advantages of both techniques and promises to be as simple and inexpensive as counterimmunoelectrophoresis and as sensitive and quantitative as radioimmunoassay. Finally, immunofluorescence is valuable for the demonstration of prostatic cells that have spread metastatically to distant sites. These immunological tests should strengthen the hand of the clinician in detecting and treating prostatic cancer.
