Abstract
Understanding the unique nature of cancer cells and the process of malignant transformation is heavily dependent on advances in molecular biology. A working knowledge of molecular biology concepts is essential to clinical oncology in order to stay informed of the latest fi ndings, assays of prognostic and predictive factors, and potential new therapies to deliver or enhance current treatments. Insights resulting from molecular biology research are crucial for developing newer and more specifi c targets. This principle forms the basis for “precision medicine.”
