note = "Funding Information: breast-cancer group and the gastrointestinal-cancer groups as a whole (p < 001). Although the patients were not in comparable age-ranges, since patients with gastro-intestinal cancer were usually somewhat older than those with breast cancer, our findings 1are unlikely to be due primarily to differences in age or sex. The possibility that {"} inhibitors {"} are responsible for these differences cannot be entirely dismissed, since these might not always be present in sufficient concentrations to produce the extremely high IgE results noted by Jacobs et al. Indeed, the existence of serum-antibodies of high affinity to IgE which diminish the binding of labelled antigen in a radioimmunosorbent test has apparently been established.3 Nevertheless, our preliminary results strongly suggest that the site of the tumour may influence the serum-IgE level, though the mechanism involved is obscure.
