Abstract

Heroism among military physicians has been heralded throughout our history. Four Navy trauma surgeons who received the Navy Cross for extraordinary service during the Vietnam War were studied with reference to their early lives, the events leading to the act for which they received the Navy Cross, and their later lives. Their heroic feats dramatize the corporeal and intellectual courage that has been displayed by generations of physicians.
