Abstract

Our everyday vision, which allows us to recognize objects and detect their motion, is mediated by the rod and cone photoreceptors in the retina. Rods mediate vision in dim light. Cones mediate vision in bright light and also give us color vision. The mechanisms underlying the light response in rods and cones are now very well understood, to the extent that many hereditary diseases affecting vision have been elucidated.
