Abstract

Depression can be a major contributing factor in impotence. In addition to a general decrease in libido, there can be episodes of inability to establish or maintain an erection which further depress the patient. As the depression deepens, the individual will become less concerned about the potency disorder but will become increasingly anhedonic with the impotence being just one part of the symptom cluster of severe depression. Hostility often thought to be a main factor in impotence, whereby the patient is able to vent his hostility toward his wife through inability to function as a sexually adequate partner.
