Abstract

The mechanism by which the sensation of pain is coded in the peripheral nervous system are reviewed. Activity in a specific group of nerve fibers signals the intensity of pain. The increase in pain sensitivity following a burn to the skin is signaled by the increase responsiveness of a subset of these nerve fibers.
