Abstract
Pulmonary artery hypertension is underrecognized in the perioperative period and can be a life-threatening complication. This chapter reviews the presentation of pulmonary hypertension and diagnostic tests and management strategies for treating it. Understanding its physiology, early recognition of the complication, avoidance of factors that can worsen it, and judicious treatment are all essential. New therapies, such as inhaled nitric oxide, may also help improve outcome.
