Abstract

Percutaneous bedside dilatational tracheotomy has become a safe alternative to open tracheotomy. Based on the widely practiced Seldinger technique, the Ciaglia procedure can be a useful addition to an otolaryngologist's armamentarium. Adherence to a rigid protocol including considerations of contraindications, use of a team approach, and bronchoscopic guidance will ensure optimal outcome.
