Abstract

Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is an often serious consequence of sexually transmitted diseases. The personal and societal costs of acute PID may be minimized by early diagnosis and effective treatment. Diagnosis of PID is aided by laparoscopy, but asymptomatic endometrial/tubal infection is present in a sizeable number of women. The treatment of PID, once diagnosed, is empiric and broad spectrum.
