Abstract
Osteoarthritis is a multifactorial process. Although it is clearly influenced by age, it is neither solely a disease of aging, nor simply a wear-and-tear deterioration of the cartilage. Unrealistic goals often lead to frustration, depression, misunderstanding, and inappropriate withdrawal from activities and family. A careful assessment of the patient's concepts and personal goals is therefore important.
