Abstract
"The obligations to battle pain and addiction are not mutually exclusive, they are mutually inextricable."12 Abuse of opioids is a serious and increasing problem, particularly among teenagers. Physicians need to be aware of the factors associated with opioids and take steps to mitigate the risk of abuse by individual patients. This includes proper screening and monitoring and the use of emerging agents that will effectively control pain and may be associated with a lower risk of abuse.
