Abstract

The use of a lateral approach to the craniovertebral junction, based on a modification of Verbeist's exposure of the cervical spine, is described. The technique allows removal of antero-laterally placed lesions of this area, while minimizing retraction of important neurovascular structures and providing proximal arterial control. We have used this approach in over 30 patients with various pathologies with good results.
