Abstract
A mathematical model to predict the changes in total size and in age structure of a long-stay mental handicap hospital population is developed. The model allows the average number of admissions to, and discharges from, the population each year to be varied, so that allowance may be made for different rates of transfer of care for the handicapped into the community. The model is applied to the mental handicap hospitals of West Berkshire.
