Abstract

It is believed that small syringes exert less negative pressure than large ones, and that syringe liposuction exerts less negative pressure than vacuum suction pumps. We evaluated the negative pressures generated by syringes of 1, 3, 6, 12, 30, and 60 mL connected to a vacuum pressure gauge. The pressures correlated directly to the number of cubic centimeters aspirated, independent of syringe caliber. The number of milliliters pulled back by the plunger seems to be the primary determinant of negative pressures generated by syringes. Any size syringe used correctly may harvest adipose tissue at low or high desired negative pressures. A graph is provided to help gauge negative pressure generated by milliliters pulled back.
