Abstract
The use of small bundles of specially prepared optical fibers, powerful light sources, and high-resolution video equipment provides an excellent view of the pelvis when the fiber is inserted through a 3-mm diameter trocar sleeve. The excellent diagnostic capability of this system is further enhanced by the use of 3-mm manipulating instruments inserted into the abdomen at the usual secondary puncture site. Fiber-optic lasers have also been used to develop minimally invasive techniques of operative laparoscopy.
