Abstract

A microstructurally based model for soft biological tissues was adapted to model the nonlinear response of the collagen network in skin. Quasi-static uniaxial tensile tests were conducted on dorsal skin of rats aged 1-4 months. Specimens were taken longitudinally and transversely to the spine and tested at 1.5%/s. The stiffness and microstructural organization of the collagenous network are reported and discussed with respect to biochemical and morphological observations. The model was found to be a convenient and objective way of quantifying the nonlinear response of skin. The model was also found to be sensitive to changes in the microstructure of skin due to age and specimen orientation.
