Computer-integrated surgery systems combining medical imaging, robotic and sensor technology, and advanced computation will have a profound influence on surgical practice in coming decades. This short overview discusses medical robotics within the context of computer-integrated surgery systems and illustrates these themes with examples drawn from current clinical application and ongoing research. Our discussion draws mainly upon our own experiences with medical robot systems, although other systems are also mentioned where appropriate to illustrate key points.
