note = "Funding Information: Sin Urban is an Associate Professor at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine (USA) and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI). He received his BSc in Honours Genetics at the University of Alberta (Canada), where he studied DNA replication using bacteriophage T4 and Hepatitis B Virus. He earned a PhD in 2002 at the University of Cambridge (UK), where he discovered that the Drosophila signaling factor rhomboid is an intramembrane protease. Dr Urban started his independent research group in 2004 as a Harvard University Fellow, and was recruited to Johns Hopkins in 2006. His research program has expanded to encompass investigating the biochemical mechanisms and pathogenic function of intramembrane proteases. Dr Urban is currently a Fellow of the Packard Foundation, and serves on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Biological Chemistry and on the Governing Council of the International Proteolysis Society. Dr Urban has received numerous awards for his work, including: the Genetics Society of America Sandler Award for Most Outstanding PhD Dissertation, Oxford{\textquoteright}s Rolleston and MRC{\textquoteright}s Max Perutz Prizes for Original Research, HRH the Princess of Wales{\textquoteright} Canada Scholarship for AIDS Research, the Cambridge Gedge Prize for Outstanding Observations in Physiology, and a career award from the Burroughs-Wellcome Fund.
